So, Anime USA 2013 had some problems; and I wore myself down Saturday night, but doing panels and taking part in the storytelling event would do that. Got sick Sunday, so ended up missing a panel I was due to do (sorry….)
But more than the convention of Anime USA, were the people that I met there.
Jed of My Little Po-Mo had just gotten his book of critical essays made available, I met Uncle Yo for the first time, and I was talking about different topics than I usually do: sexism and gender roles in anime, along with a bit on Heian era Japan, and I planned to take part in the storytelling event too.
I ended up talking with steampunk jewelers, games department staffers, kimono and fabric goods dealers, and travel agents all alike! Unfortunately my hakama was too big… but it was fun!
Also, due to the influence of Jed and my friend and colleague Charles, I watched a few episodes of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, including the season 2 two-parter with Discord. The ways that tricksters and magic are portrayed, and how people see different aspects of themselves in the show, are fascinating to me.
But don’t worry. I won’t become Professor Cupcakes any time soon.
